Looker Studio GA4 Data Not Updating: How to Fix Stale or Mismatched Numbers
You refresh your Looker Studio report, but the GA4 numbers look exactly like they did yesterday — or worse, they don't match what you see in the GA4 interface for the same date range. If a client just asked "why does this say 400 sessions when GA4 shows 600?", you're in the right place.
Why this happens
Ranked from most common to least:
- Report or data source caching. Looker Studio caches query results, especially in view mode. If nobody has edited the report or forced a refresh, viewers can see hours-old data even though the underlying connector is fine.
- GA4's own data processing delay. GA4 does not process events in real time for standard reports. Data can take up to 24-48 hours to fully process, and intraday data is provisional and subject to change. If you're comparing "today" numbers, mismatches are expected, not a bug.
- Sampling or thresholding on the GA4 side. When a report pulls a custom dimension/metric combination or a long date range with low traffic, GA4 applies thresholding (data withheld for privacy) or sampling, which changes numbers between pulls and between the GA4 UI and the API that Looker Studio uses.
- Connector authorization has expired or changed. If the Google account that authorized the GA4 connector lost access to the property, had its password changed, or had 2FA re-triggered, Looker Studio silently keeps showing the last successfully fetched data instead of erroring out clearly.
- Wrong GA4 property or data stream selected. A property migration, a duplicate property, or someone reconnecting the data source to a different GA4 property can produce numbers that look "stale" because they're actually from a different (often paused) property.
- Date range and comparison settings. A fixed date range instead of a dynamic one ("Last 28 days" vs. two hardcoded dates) will look frozen because it is — the range simply never advances.
Fix, step by step
- Open the report and check the date range control at the top. If it's set to fixed dates, switch it to a dynamic range like "Last 30 days" so it advances automatically.
- Force a manual refresh: click the three-dot menu in view mode (or use the refresh icon on the report) and select Refresh data. If you're the editor, also try File > Refresh Data from the top menu.
- Check the caching setting: in edit mode, go to File > Report settings and review the caching options. Disabling "Cache data across pages and reports" while you troubleshoot will confirm whether cache is the culprit.
- Verify the connector's data source: click Resource > Manage added data sources, open the GA4 connector, and confirm the property and data stream match the account you expect. Reconnect if the property name looks unfamiliar.
- Re-authorize the connection: on the same data source, click Edit Connection or look for an "Authorize" / "Re-authenticate" prompt. If the original owner's Google account lost access to the GA4 property, transfer ownership of the data source or have that person re-authorize.
- Cross-check for sampling/thresholding: in GA4, pull the same metric and dimension combination directly in Explore. If GA4 itself shows a "thresholding applied" or sampling icon, the discrepancy is GA4's behavior, not Looker Studio's.
- Compare against GA4's processing window: if the discrepancy is only for the last 24-48 hours, wait — this is standard GA4 processing delay, not a technical fault.
- If numbers still don't match, rebuild the chart's field: sometimes a calculated field or blended data source references a stale copy of a dimension. Delete and re-add the metric/dimension on one chart as a test.
Copy-paste diagnostic checklist
LOOKER STUDIO + GA4 STALE DATA CHECKLIST
[ ] Date range control: dynamic ("Last N days"), not fixed dates
[ ] Manual refresh attempted (File > Refresh Data)
[ ] Report caching: tested with caching disabled in Report settings
[ ] Data source > GA4 property name matches expected account/property
[ ] Data source > GA4 data stream matches expected web/app stream
[ ] Connector authorization: owner account still has GA4 property access
[ ] Re-authorized connection (Edit Connection > Authorize) if unsure
[ ] Cross-checked same metric/dimension pair directly in GA4 Explore
[ ] Checked for "thresholding applied" or sampling icon in GA4 UI
[ ] Confirmed discrepancy isn't within GA4's 24-48h processing window
[ ] Rebuilt one chart's field as isolation test (delete + re-add metric)
[ ] Report owner/editor identity confirmed (ownership transferred if staff changed)
How to verify it worked
Pick one metric — sessions is fine — and pull the exact same date range in both GA4's standard report and your Looker Studio chart. Refresh both, wait a few seconds, and compare. If they match within a few points (small variance is normal even without sampling), the connection and caching are healthy. Repeat the check the next day to confirm the numbers are actually advancing and not frozen on a fixed range.
Once the data source itself is trustworthy again, the real work starts: turning those numbers into decisions instead of just staring at a dashboard. That's the gap Next Action Analyst fills — it takes your GA4 exports and tells you what to do next, so a stale-data scare doesn't also cost you a day of analysis.
Next Action Analyst turns your campaign export into a prioritized list of changes to make tomorrow — with the numbers that justify each one.
